SKIDZ – The Wycombe Motor Project was started nearly 10 years ago to provide “hands on” learning opportunities for young people. The project proved to be very popular with young people, schools, statutory agencies, parents and funders mainly due to the delivery style of the instructors. The project is run as a workplace rather than a school or college with a lot of personal responsibility given to the young people and an expectation that they will behave in an acceptable and appropriate way.
The Wycombe project has doubled its workshop space in those 10 years and has nearly 300 people a week attending a variety of courses. These range in age from 12 to 65 years old, male and female, a broad ethnic mix and all abilities. The project is 80% self funded through course fees and work undertaken and we would like to increase this to 90% to reduce our dependence on grants.
The success of the project has resulted in its replication in Aylesbury, Banbury and Reading and the formation of networks of motor projects in the Thames Valley and London.
